In the year 1961, our Society, with a mission to eradicate ignorance and illiteracy of the people of the region started an Arts and Science College at Nipani. At that time this was the only college catering to the educational needs of the major parts of Belagavi and Vijayapur districts. In 1966, the college was named after late Shri Ganapati Ishwarappa Bagewadi who donated a munificent sum for the development of the college. Subsequently, in the year 1977 Commerce faculty was added. In the ever changing scenario of Globalization and Liberalization and to cater to the needs of the economically, socially disadvantaged rural youth of our hinterland who could not afford the higher education elsewhere. The PG programme in Commerce was started in the academic year 2010-11and PG in Mathematics and English were introduced in the academic year 2017-18.

The institution is spread over 11.2 acres of lush green land along the old NH4 near Central Bus Stand of the town. The main building has 29 state-of-art class rooms, 11 well equipped labs, staff common room, separate ladies staff room, room for girl students and office units. Adjacent to the main building are the Library and Gymkhana; there are NSS and NCC units, Healthcare Unit, Youth Red Cross Wing, Canteen and a Bank with ATM. The library has more than 50,000 volumes on its shelves with well ventilated separate reading rooms for boys, girls and staff. The various departments are provided with LAN and Internet connections. We have two computer labs with internet connections. Gymkhana and Swimming Pool have been constructed with UGC financial assistance. These sports facilities and the spacious common play field meet the needs of sport persons and athletes. While the boys and girls have separate hostel facilities, the teaching staff enjoys the facility of residential quarters.

The faculty members keep themselves updated to enable the students to face the world with a spirit of competence and confidence. The college is actively involved in research and extension activities too. Faculties have engaged themselves in MRPs; there are 15 doctorates, 07 MPhil degree holders and 08 are pursuing their PhDs. The institution has highly qualified faculty, rank holders, Gold Medalists, Researchers, Authors and Litterateurs with healthy, judicious amalgam of youth and experience. We have a teacher-student ratio of about 1:15. Our student friendly office and support staff have been leaving no stone unturned to come to the assistance of the stakeholders. As recognition of our efforts in this noble field, Science faculty of our college was placed at seventh rank out of top 10 Science colleges in Karnataka in a survey conducted by 'The Sunday Indian' a National level magazine.

In the year 2010 during the second cycle of accreditation the institution was accredited by NAAC at 'A' level with the highest CGPA of 3.25 in the jurisdiction of Rani Channamma University, Belagavi. In 2015, our institution was accredited by NAAC in its 3rd cycle at 'A' level again with the highest CGPA of 3.35 in the jurisdiction of Rani Channamma University, Belagavi.

The institution inculcates competence and creativity through innovations in teaching-learning, research and extension activities, women empowerment, optimal use of human resources and infrastructural facilities. Lady students constitute about 63% of our college enrollment. More than 85% of the students are from village based peasant families, to whom we have been imparting soft skills and communication skills apart from the syllabi prescribed by curricula.

Our students are performing excellently in cultural and sports fields also. Our students have bagged prizes in UG and PG level youth festivals. Our sports persons have become University Blues and some of our NCC and NSS cadets have brought laurels to our college.

The college was granted permanent affiliation on 10th September 1990 by Karnatak University, Dharwad. Now the college is affiliated to Rani Channamma University, Belagavi as a result of carving out of a new University from Karnatak University. To alleviate the struggle and hardship of semi urban students to pursue their higher studies, PG course in Commerce was introduced in the year 2010 and P.G. courses in Mathematics and English in 2018 and also UG Course in BSc (CS) was introduced in 2018. Further to make our students competent to face the outside world, fifteen certificate short duration courses have been started as add-on skill oriented courses. Our college offers degree courses in BA, BSc, BCom, MCom, MSc and MA. At present the college enjoys the strength of 1128 students with 86 faculty members. The college has recognition of UGC and is included in the list maintained under 2[f] and eligible to receive central grants under 12[B] of UGC Act.1956.

As many as 10 class rooms, a separate ladies staff room and a technology enabled Golden Jubilee Conference Hall were constructed under UGC assistance during the XI Plan period.

The institution always makes efforts to achieve competence and creativity among students and ensures active participation of all the stakeholders in all the processes of the institution.
